Madelyn Lorenz & I started the first kindergarten in Portage Twp. about 1960 in the McCool Methodist Church. Madelyn still lives there but she & her husband, Chuck Lorenz on McCool Rd. have both had health problems. The teacher was Joann (Jody) Lewis (now in her 90s) who now lives in Florida and her email is: joannlewis531@gamail.com. Later she was the librarian at Portage. I was a news reporter for the Vidette-Messenger during the incorporation and many of the stories can be viewed on line. I also taught at Central School for 25 years. My grandson is bringing me to Portage Saturday. My husband, Bob Yates, built our home on Samuelson Road. He died in 1995. I gave a box of photos to the Portage paper which may have dissolved. June
June,
I am so sorry I just found this message. Thanks for checking in.
We have some pictures that we could not identify and they had “Yates” on the back and some percentage numbers so I figures they came from someone at a newspaper.
I am with the Portage Historical Society.
I just found your answer, Kathy.
My second husband, George McKinniss, died Nov. 38, 2015 and I moved back to Otterbein, In where I had a house all the 19 years we were married. I have been trying to find some of the stories I wrote about the incorporation of Portage in the Vidette-Messenger. June Yates (McKinniss)

Hello.
My name is Mark Hoiseth and I’m looking for information regarding a stage coach my grandfather Oscar Hoiseth made by hand back in the 1970’s…some family friends think he may have sold it or donated it somewhere in Porter County.
Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated as my father and I would simply like to see it again.
Thank you.
I’ve been with the Portage Community Historical Society for over 10 years and have never heard about this stagecoach but I’d be happy to post your question in our newsletter.
